I read how kids are starting to self-embed themselves. They do this to relieve stress. They use paperclips, nailpolish wands, screw, etc. Doctors have seen so many infections so they have to treat it right away. Some doctors choose to leave the thihngs inside of the kids instead of taking them out. I think that this is a weird, horrible, and painful thing to do to relieve stress. Why don't the kids just listen to music, read a book, go for a run, or scream into a pillow to relieve their stress.

I read the article about how college students using facebook while doing their school work affects their grade point average. I agree with the article because it is hard to multitask and do a good job on alot of work. Also the article talked about how it takes students longer to accomplish tasks if you are multitasking.

The summary I am writing is about the facebook article on kids spendinh to much time on facebook while doing homework causing a 20 percent drop in college students grades. I believe that by focusing on this subject that this will help the students act more efficentally towards their school work

I have just read the Facebook article by Suzan Choney, and I agree with her. She said that students that have a facebook or another social networking site have seen a 20% drop in their GPA. A study preformed by Netherlands psychologist Paul A. Kirschnera studied 219 American university students with ages ranging from 19-54 found that facebook users tend to have a lower GPA than those who don't have a facebook. This goes not only for facebook advocates, but also for the multi-tasking students. So for all the students put aside the cell phones and the computer and take the time to study without distractions.

This week I read the article "Facebook use can lower grades by 20%, says study". This article is about a recent study done in the Netherlands about the effect of using Facebook on USA university students. They found that students who had Facebook running in the background had a grade point average of 3.06 and "non-users" had a GPA of 3.82. While I do believe that Facebook can be distracting at times, I do not believe that it is the main cause for this GPA difference. I believe that texting, listening to music, or having the television on can also be to blame. In conclusion, I think that the article has a lot of truth in it, I believe that Facebook is not the only culprit.

Facebook can be addicting. Studies show the more students that keep getting on facebook the farther their grades drop down. Their grades drop down because the students spend more time on facebook, then they do their homework. Facebook can be very dristracting, with people instant messaging and blogging. I think people should start setting time limits for how much they use facebook, and students use it when their done doing their work or studying. Facebook can be very fun to go on you just gotta know when to log off.

The article I read on facebook I felt was very informative. This article was on how college students using facebook while studying do 20% worse in school. A Netherlands psychologist named Paul A. Kirschnera is the man conducting the test. He explains how distracted students are while trying to complete work while on facebook. I agree that facebook can be very distracting while doing work. Students should focus on work and use facebook after work is complete.

In an article written by Suzanne Choney about a recent study on how facebook affects people’s grades. In the study 219 students between the ages of 19 and 54 facebook users had an average grade of 3.06 and non users had an average of 3.82. This article isn’t about facebook being good or bad it’s about young people not being as good at multitasking as people say they are. With the increasing dependence on computers facebook is taking up a lot of time young people should use studying.

Is Facebook a problem or not? Psychologists say that students who have a facebook account spend more time on thier facebook than doing homework. Studies show that non facebook users have a higher gpa, on average about 20%. I believe that it is not just Facebook. Anything can distract you. The psychologists only studied facebook users. Why? It is a distraction. So how could myspace not distract you? Its almost identical. Cell phones, ipods, mp3 players, television, there all distractions, and they are all the same.

Facebook use can lower grades by 20 percent by Suzanne Choney is an article about a recent study. This study was done by Netherlands psychologist Paul A. Kirschnera and Aryn c. Karpinskib of Ohio State University.
Kirschnera and Karpinskib surveyed two hundred nineteen U.S. university students between the ages of nineteen and fifty-four. On average facebook users had a GPA of 3.06 while non-facebook users had an average GPA of 3.82. This suggests that doing homework and facebook at the same time may not be the best thing.
I feel that this study should have included more than hundred nineteen people. Once more studies have been done it will be easier to see the results.
Kirschnera and Karpinskib may have been on to something. However, the surveyed group was small and more studies should be done.

In recent report, msnbc.com news, Suzanne Choney reports that students in college that are Facebook users show a trend of getting 20 percent lower grades than other peers of theirs who either don’t use this social network, or don’t use it constantly.
The Psychologist who did this study is Paul A Kirschnera of the Center for Learning Sciences and Technologies at the Open University of the Netherlands. He also had some help from Aryn C Karpinskib of Ohio State University. They found out that typically college students between the ages of 19 & 54 have an average GPA of 3.82 without Facebook. With it lowers it to 3.06.
I think that this article is correct, because kids now days are tending to multitask all the time. If someone is social networking on Facebook, or even other sites, they are bound to not be fully focused and their grade suffers because of periodic small mistakes.
To conclude, I feel that Suzanne Choney was smart to do a report on the college age Facebook users’ grades lowering. So now, these social networking people will maybe use it less and achieve a higher average GPA in college & be successful.

Can Facebook lower your GPA? The study performed at the Ohio State College shows reasonable evidence that this can indeed happen. Facebook takes away valuable study time. Also just the use of internet for work related purposes can have negative consequences.
College students seem to be using Facebook far too much to be able to also keep an above average GPA. When College students use Facebook their time to study and learn is highly reduced. With less study time their averages for school lower creating distress for the students. I feel that this study is actually showing that students aren’t focused enough on their studies.
The over use of Facebook, or even sketchy information sites, can lead to negative results. This study does prove that students do not pay enough attention to their real goals in life. I believe that this article does give sufficient and reasonable facts to prove that this study may be plausible.

I read the article “Facebook use can lower grades by 20 percent” which was found on msnbc.com and written by Suzanne Choney. I do not agree with or trust half if not all of this article.
In this article it states that they did a study on 219 United States university students. I think that 219 students out of the whole United States in not a big enough test to give a good enough idea on what is really going on. This article questions whether our generation is good at multitasking and in my opinion when it comes to most things we are.
In conclusion, this article does not give a date that the supposed survey was given nor does it list any known legitimate sources so it is hard for me to trust it.

New Orleans Saints running back and college standout Reggie Bush may lose his Heisman trophy due to major violations of NCAA rules. Bush accepted money and other gifts before the 2004-2005 NCAA football season. I think that this is important because it will affect the prestige of not only Reggie Bush, but the entire USC College.
I think that Reggie should have his trophy taken away. Even though Bush had an amazing season, the Heisman Trophy isn’t just about what you do on the field; it is how you represent yourself and your university off of the field. You can be the best player and have the most records but if you violate the rules, you shouldn’t be able to keep any awards.

The article “Facebook use can lower grades by 20 percent, study says” written by Suzanne Choney is a very informative passage. It is trying to spread word of the results of multi-tasking, whether they be good or bad.
A psychologist team studied 219 U.S. university students of various ages. They found that the students that have a Facebook have a GPA of 3.06, while the non-users have a GPA of 3.82. The purpose of the article was not to bash Facebook, but to show that in general young people are fluid multi-taskers. Specialists have proven that multi-tasking takes more time and effort. As you are distracted, careless, and will often make more mistakes than if you were to plan out your steps accordingly.
Being an avid Facebook user and often multi-task myself this article appealed to me. I found the passage very factual and informing, as I often like to watch television and do my homework at the same time. I would have preferred that the studied consisted of more people than just 219. I do though consider the source very reliable due to the sponsors, studies, and statistics listed. Overall I found the article very enjoyable.

I read the article “Facebook use can lower grades by 20 percent” by Suzanne Choney. As far as the research goes, I don’t find that it is reliable. However, there are a few points I agree with.
The problems I have with the research are that only 219 collage students in the U.S. were studied. I also question what collages and students were surveyed. The point I agree with is that you get more and a better quality work done with less distractions. For example people tend to concentrate better in a library or a quiet place that has no distractions than they would at home with tempting distractions such as cell phones, iPods, or TVs all over. However I feel there are more distractions than Facebook.
Overall I feel this article isn’t all that reliable but I did find that it had some interesting points to think about. I don’t think Facebook will make you less intelligent if you use it wisely.

I recently read the article Trust to take Bush’s Heisman. This article is about how NFL player Reggie Bush won the Heisman trophy but shouldn’t have. Bush received the trophy in 2005, but now in 2010 is getting striped of the trophy and the honor for that season vacant.
Reggie Bush is a running back for the New Orleans Saints; in 2005 he received the Heisman trophy. Apparently Bush committed multiple violations by accepting cash, gift and other impermissible benefits while playing for the Trojans. These violations ruled Bush ineligible for the trophy. If Bush committed these violations I believe they should relive him of the award.
After reading Trust to take Bush’s Heisman I don’t believe he should receive the trophy. Bush is a good player but violated the terms for the trophy, now he has to deal with the consequences.

The article “Facebook use can lower grades by 20 percent” is a well rounded argument. I believe that it’s true. The article said that the user GPA is around 3.06 while the non users are about 3.82. It could be many other things than Facebook.
I believe that Facebook can lower your grades but I also believe that multitasking in general can damage grades. It could be talking to a friend or as simple as watching TV but it still draws attention away from your school work.
So all in all I believe that Facebook isn’t entirely the problem, I believe its hot trends and multitasking. So you can’t blame on activity that people spend a lot of time doing while there are tons of other trends that teenagers and older kids and even adults waste most of their day and even life doing.

The article, “Facebook use can lower grades by 20 percent study says” seems to be a somewhat reliable source. The article proves a good point, and nobody really benefits from it besides the targeted audience. The survey was based on two hundred and nineteen college students. They found that facebook is very much of a distraction while bored and doing schoolwork.
People doing psychological studies at the Technologies at the Open University of the Netherlands, such as Paul A. Kirschnera support the theory and agree with the fact that facebook is a very large distraction to most students. College students without a social networking account, are often having grade point averages that are twenty percent higher than the students at the University that have facebook, or other any other social networking relations. The average student without technological social connections in their lives has a grade point average of about 3.82; while any students with social networking is usually 3.06.
This article is a reliable source because it uses actual facts from two different Universities located at two different sides of the world. It also is just warning people about the possible effects that the social networking technologies could have on their brain and schoolwork for being a distraction. Even though the modern day United States citizens are often required to be fluent multitaskers, that does not mean that their grades need to drop significantly.

I don’t believe that the article ‘Facebook use can lower grades by 20 percent’ is a reliable source at all. There are thousands of colleges and students around the world. Many people have Facebooks in college so studying people at one college can’t represent all schools. Also the reason peoples averages are what they are could be for a different reason.
Facebook was created for college students to use, it wasn’t meant to have an affect on students’ grades. Plenty of other things that exist can be distracting while doing homework. If children decide to multi-task it can either reflect negatively or positively, focusing on one thing is hard but taking your mind off it for a while helps.
The study states many things that can distract people. These things will always exist and whether it affects their grades or not, but forcing your mind to focus also isn’t going to help. Doing a study on this one thing doesn’t decide if everything if distracting.

Mrs. McI said...

This source is believable because so many people can race to finish their homework just to get it done, not study for tests, or not do their homework at all and not get a good grade on homework.

People who has facebook up and running tend to look at their facebook for the news or to look for their friend’s updated statuses. They tend to be more interested in facebook then to be studying or doing their homework. People also can just write stuff down just to get it done and over with. Facebook users also worry about instant messaging other facebook users about their day or who is cute or whatever else you may need to talk about.

All in all, this source is true because people don’t get their homework done or don’t spend as much time of studying as they need to. I think facebook is a distraction to most people.

In the article “Facebook use can lower grades by 20 percent, study says” By Suzanne Choney, Studies have shown that the use of facebook, or any other social networking sites, may be the cause of grade point average drops. Some may think this statement is true but I disagree. The information in the article states that one 219, a small percentage of U.S. college students were surveyed. By surveying a limited amount of students, you may not get an accurate answer when there are many more people/students that may not apply to this.
The amount of people in the United States in quite large. Part of this amount includes college students. Since the internet may be an option to keep one occupied, many people use it. Facebook is one of the many sites on the internet. This may be one of the main things in the article but there are many other possible reasons of grade drops. Other distractions such as: videogames and TV. Also the student may not be ones who like to study.
In conclusion if the amount of peoples surveyed increased, the result would be more accurate. This article may not apply to all college students. Also they should not limit the reason to facebook and or the internet; there are many more reasons why this grade drop may occur.

The article on the grade slowly dropping is behind Facebook. Facebook is a social site that many teenagers in the world use to talk and communicate with friends. There was a research on grades dropping at a University that was interesting to me. I will explain the disadvantage of multitasking while on the computer.

A study at two Universities show that multitasking can be a bad thing even though you think that you get things done faster you actually make more time for yourself. Students that use facebook get lower grades than those ones who don’t use it. Why, do you ask because when they multitask they cant concentrate one what they are doing like homework.

I found this article to be interesting because I now know that do one thing at a time so you don’t get a horrible grade drop. Concentrate on the most important thing that needs to be done.

In the article “Facebook use can lower grades by 20 percent” a study claims that the use of social networking sites can lower college students’ grades. During the study 219 students were surveyed and the results were a GPA drop of about 20%. This seems believable but some parts of the study are questionable.
As previously stated only 219 students were surveyed this number is far too small to be significant. This is because the number of people surveyed is only a very small piece of the vast number of people in colleges, to accurately represent the students nation wide. The study also stated that some of the surveyed students multi-task, this is important because it allows the study to deviate from Facebook into a much broader spectrum, making the validity of the study questionable.
All included this article is too questionable for me to believe. The lack of hard facts and moving to a broader spectrum takes the purpose of the study out of focus. All in all the accusation, however factual it may be, the article does not do it justice.

Recent studies are proving that facebook is causing a major problem with students’ grades. Students are starting to pay more attention to their social networking sites rather than their homework. This is causing a loss of concentration and dedication to school work.
I agree that a lot of students are beginning to lose focus due to internet and technology activities. I believe that staying connected with family and friends is important, but so is school. How well you do in school will determine what you do for the rest of your life. Suzanne Choney, of MSNBC, did a study proving that students who study while also being on facebook will get a twenty percent lower grade compared to a person that studies while not no facebook. It is also proven that their GPA will drop dramatically compared to a “non-user”.
Without good grades and a good education, you can’t get a good job or a good career. Is facebook really worth throwing your life away? By studying without facebook or other social networking sites up on your computer, you are improving your grade, your mind, and your chance at a better career.

In a recent study on college students it was said that all college students that use facebook while studying have twenty percent lower grades. The facebook user that is using facebook while studying could get lower grades depending on the person. It depends on the person and their work ethic.

I believe that a student that uses facebook could be more involved with studying or facebook, it all depends. A student that has a good social life would have more interest in facebook and lower grades because they are more worried about the next party than the next test. A student that has no social life but still uses facebook would have higher grades because he or she is more worried about getting good grades than anything else.

Suzanne Choney, with msnbc, did a good job with this article; I just don’t believe that it is always true. Some people can multi task and still get good grades. Others just have good luck or very good memory. I personally think it all depends on the individual.

News reporter Suzanne Choney did research on college students who multitask while doing homework. The result of multitasking while studying, reading or doing homework has proven to lower grade point averages. The study was based on social networking sites, emails and instant messaging.
The study was reported in Daily Mail of Britain by Netherlands psychologist Paul A. Krischnera of the Center for Learning Science and Technologies at the University of Netherland. Krischnera studied 219 U.S University’s between the ages of 18 and 54. The adults who used a social network like Facebook while they studied or learned tended to have lower grade point averages then those who don’t use it. Psychologists believe from past studies that people think multitasking gets more done in less time it extends the amount of time needed to carry out the task and leads to more mistakes. Many doctors also think that its not only Facebook but whatever else people use while they are on the internet.
In all the study shows by Psychologists that college students who multitask can have lower grade point average than those who don’t multitask. People who multitask while learning get distracted from learning and make it harder to learn with distractions.

In the case of Reggie Bush getting the Heisman Trophy taken, I would have to agree. Reggie should not get the trophy. He does not deserve the trophy for the actions that he did. While others think he does deserve the trophy, I disagree.
First, just because Reggie is a celebrity football player, does not mean that he deserves everything everyone thinks he does. Reggie does not deserve this trophy because he accepted gifts and money he should not have. By taking these gifts, he is showing that he may be in just for money and fame. Fame and money is not everything. He should face the consequence of getting the trophy taken away. Others say that he should get it taken away because he is one of the few that has had a problem with this award.

In my opinion I don’t think people should be on face book as much as they have been. I feel it cuts down the amount of education and focus you have in your work. Self-embedding

The article that I have read is, “Self-Embedding Takes Teens Self Injury to the Extreme” is by Jenifer Goodwin Health Day Reporter.
In this article teenage kids from the ages of 14-18 yrs take staples, paperclips, a screw from a pair of glasses, pencil lead, glass, wood, and metal materials and placing them under their skin. Teens do this instead of cutting or burning themselves so the scare is not as big. The pain is much worse though because; it causes infections under your skin. What then the doctor has to remove them from your either your arms, legs, neck, wrists, and ankles.
Between the percent of 13-23 U.S. teens have reported intentionally self-injury according to the background information. There were about 600 patients of all ages who went to the hospital. 11 patients or about 1.8 percent had intentionally done this to them-selves. They ranged from the ages of 14-18 yrs. nine of them were girls. Many of these teens do this to themselves because, of depression, bipolar disorder, stress disorder and many more. Doctors have remover between 68-76self-embedded objects before. One 18 year old boy had embedded 35 objects including staples, a tooth from a comb, a fork tine, and a nail polish wand.
Personally I think self-embedding would be one of the worst things that you could do to your body. If anything, someone, or something is bothering you write it down in a notebook or on anything to get it off your chest, instead of taking out on yourself or somebody else. And that was what I thought of self-embedding.

Heisman trophy

The embattled USC athletic department attempted to erase Reggie Bush’s legacy in one fell swoop Tuesday by announcing it will return its copy of his Heisman trophy.
I think it’s very dumb. In think its very dumb because receiving benefits from USC is minor compared to what some of the other athletes have done to come close of getting their trophy stripped. For example, a famous athlete was charged with murder and rape but wasn’t stripped of the Heisman.
I also disagree because I think receiving benefits from your college wouldn’t be so much your fault. He obviously received benefits because he was good. I think for being talented and receiving benefits would be something to be proud of.
In conclusion I will say that for Reggie Bush the star athlete off USC in 2005 to be stripped of the Heisman trophy is less to nothing compared to other athletes histories who have received the Heisman.
